The afternoon session of the field hockey begins as the Asian country Pakistan will be pitched against European Giant Spain. Asian Games 2010 Gold Medalists Pakistan will take on Bronze Medalists of Beijing Olympics Spain in the 2nd match of Pool A at 13:45 BST.
Pakistan’s is hoping well for a medal in hockey. The 35-year-old sharp shooter Sohail Abbas is the captain of the squad. Three times Olympic champions and four times world champions Pakistan’s performance has slumped at international level as they finished at their worst-ever eighth position in the last Olympics in Beijing four years ago, and then slumped to the 12th and last position in the 2010 World Cup in India. The team did win the Asian title in China in late 2010.
In 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Spain came forward as a strong team and currently rank 5 in World Hockey ranking after those games and now pose a serious threat for Pakistan who seeks chances for advancement to the next stage in the Olympics. History reminds us that Spain always wanted to get an abrupt start but always failed to acquire their wish and spend a lot of time in game for gaining momentum in the field of Hockey.
Spain needs to improve their opening encounters despite years of preparation for the London. This is the only edge Pakistan team have against Spain. Spanish success ladder also include their runners-up finish at the 2011 Champion’s trophy in New Zealand. The Spanish Team packed with skillful players indeed like Santiago Freixa, Pablo Amat and Eduard Tubau in that Spanish team. The defense of Pakistan should be strong in this hockey match because Spain is relatively weak at midfielder and they rely upon their strikers so far. Penalty corner is also a big challenge for Spain team.
On the other hand Pakistan is fortunate to have the world’s best drag-flicker as well as leading goal-scorer in their side against Spain. The best strategy for Pakistan is to rely more upon penalty corners as much as they can and give Sohail Abbas maximum opportunities to show his talent. This is the best way to create pressure upon Spain. Spain has to face a tough match up against abrupt and successful openers of Hockey Matches.
