This week, BMX racing has made its second appearance in the Olympic Games, featuring an assortment of the world's fastest BMX riders, including 32 men and 16 women. Held on a short outdoor track with a starting ramp that measures in at 8 meters high, BMX races typically last about 40 seconds and involve tight turns, huge jumps and straightaways.

BMX racing at the London Olympic Games began on Wednesday with seeding, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals, ending with a final race on Friday for both the men's and women's divisions.

Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam finished 20th of 32 riders in the men’s BMX seeding run at the Olympic Park facility on Wednesday, not exactly where he hoped to be heading into Thursday’s quarter-finals. The 20-year-old told he carried too much speed into the first corner, causing him to lose positioning on the track.

Although he’s ranked fifth in the world in supercross racing, Nyhaug is a bit of a darkhouse at the Olympics because he ruptured his spleen in May and had a splenectomy on June 3.

Despite the operation, and the lack of racing preparation heading into this competition, Nyhaug said he wasn’t tentative in his seeding run.

Nyhaug’s time was 39.515, or 1.736 seconds behind the fastest rider. Raymon van der Biezen of the Netherlands flew down the course in 37.779 seconds, half a second better than Joris Daudet of France. Another Dutch rider, Twan van Gendt, was third.

For Thursday’s quarter-finals, Nyhaug is grouped in with a couple of the top riders. Connor Fields of the USA was fourth and Andres Eduardo Jiminez Caicedo of Colombia was fifth after the seeding. The 12th-place rider, Liam Phillips of Britain, is also in Nyhaug’s group and will have the support of the crowd on every bump and twist of the 450-metre track.

To advance, Nyhaug will have to finish in the top four of his heat. The semifinals and finals are on Friday.
