Sri Lanka and New Zealand will take on each other today in the first of the five-match One Day International (ODI) series at Pallekele.
This series features a crucial play for both the sides as they are going through a rebuilding phase and gaining an early victory will be advantageous for any of the sides.
The weather at Pallekele is problematic over the last week, with the only T20 International of the tour between the two sides already washed out due to rain. The home team had a clear advantage in Tuesday’s fixture, chasing merely 75 runs, after restricting the Kiwis to a mere 74 for the loss of seven wickets in 14 overs, before the rain intervened.
As far as Si Lankan tem is concerned, they got a strong batting line up with an added advantage of playing at home. Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan are able to provide quick start even within the bowling friendly conditions. Mahela Jayawardene is capable of strengthening the middle order. Hence they have a remarkable batting line-up and will not get affected by the fall of early wickets. The probable Sri Lankan squad will include: 1 Mahela Jayawardene (captain), 2 Angelo Mathews, 3 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 4 Upul Tharanga, 5 Kumar Sangakkara, 6 Dinesh Chandimal, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Lasith Malinga.
On the other hand, New Zealand has a lot to worry about as their top order has totally collapsed during Tuesday’s T20 fixture. Brendon McCullum is a crucial player to bank on at the top order. Middle order is pretty solid with the presence of Ross Taylor, James Franklin and Jacob Oram. The top order is also likely to get stable with the return of Martin Guptill. The likely New Zealand lineup will include: 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Tom Latham, 3 Brendon McCullum, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 James Franklin, 6 BJ Watling, 7 Andrew Ellis, 8 Jacob Oram, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Ronnie Hira, 11 Kyle Mills.
