The Leader of Wildrose Danielle Smith has questioned the legitimacy of Edmonton Oilers owner, Daryl Katz, on Monday and asked him to resign from his position at the Board of the Alberta Investment Management Corp.

Alberta Investment Management Corp, better known as AIMCo, was inaugurated with objectives to manage an approximate $70 billion worth investments and endowments of the provincial government. Katz is one of founder board member of the company and is serving since late 2007, just before he won the bid to purchase the Oilers.

But now Smith has made serious allegation against Katz on Monday, asserting that his attendance at AIMCo is actually making the Albertans “uncomfortable” due some potential conflicts. She pointed out that the province was forced to make a contribution to a new downtown arena hosting the Oilers, and another $300,000 or more are being spent in election donations made to the PC party from Katz and people surrounding him.

Smith explained the situation saying “let me connect some dots.” Smith added that “given that a quarter of the government’s election donations are said to be from a single source, and given that source wants $100 million from the government for a hockey arena, and he sits on the board of a Crown corporation that invests $70 billion of assets owned by Albertans, doesn’t anyone in this government have a problem with that?” She noted WAM Development, which is partnering with Katz Group on the arena, has also been a partner with AIMCo in a commercial development project in Calgary.
