At the close of 2nd Day, Sri Lanka struck deep into difficult situation with 87 for 4. Mike Hussey’s completed his 19th century and with an unbeaten 115 put Australia firmly in control on a rain-hit day in Hobart. The host captain Michael Clarke declared at 450 for 5.
Sri Lanka still trail by 363, and lost Dimuth Karunaratne, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera. Tillakaratne Dilshan remains unbeaten on 50 and will need to remain on the pitch to rescue his team.
Earlier in the day, Matthew Wade made an unbeaten 68 in his hometown. The 37-year-old Hussey resumed his 37 runs in a total of 299 for 4 and played freely despite a painful blow to his knee. Clarke hardly added four runs to his overnight score before getting trapped off Shaminda Eranga being caught to Sangakkara at second slip at 74.
The visitors remain unable to fully exploit this opportunity. Afterwards, Hussey kept accumulating singles and reached his ton – the fourth century of 2012 before Clarke declared to give tourists the chance to bat.
Dilshan and Karucnaratne started off positively and flawlessly till 21 for 0. Afterwards, Karunaratne departed at 14 off Ben Hilfenhaus’ delivery and caught by Wade behind the stumps. Sangakarra made only 4 before getting caught by Hussey off Peter. Jayawardene then went leg-before-wicket for 12 to Shane Watson. And from the last ball of the day, Samaraweera top edged Nathan Lyon to Wade.
