In the beginning when New Zealand decided to bat after winning the toss, Vernon Philander took 5 for 7 in six overs to smash the tourists and send them to 45 all out in less than 20 overs for their third lowest Test total, the 12th lowest ever and the lowest at the Cape Town venue in over 100 years.

Alviro Petersen was 103 unbeaten and Hashim Amla (66) before getting lbw to Franklin and Jacques Kallis (60) after being caught by wicketkeeper Watling off Trent Boult, took their team to 252 for 3 at stumps to get total control over the match and the series. Kallis completed his 57th career half-century and became the fourth batsman to cross 13,000 Test runs after Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and the great Sachin Tendulkar. Martin Guptill was caught behind for 1 off Philander. McCullum was shortly bowled by the wild right-arm seamer for 7. Dean Brownlie was out for a duck as he edged to Smith at first slip off Philander. BJ Watling edged behind to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers for a duck to give Philander his 5th wicket. The 2.03-meter (6-foot-8) Morkel took Jeetan Patel’s wicket with a superb diving catch from Amla at mid-off. Only Kane Williamson (13) made it to double figures before falling lbw to the ruthless Philander. South Africa only needed their three star bowlers to undone New Zealand.

South African fast bowler Dale Steyn (2 for 18) became the equal third quickest bowler to 300 Test wickets and the fourth South African after Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini, and matched the 61 Tests it took Richard Hadlee and Malcolm Marshall to get to 300. Only Dennis Lillee (56 Tests) and Muttiah Muralitharan (58) were quicker to 300. Shane Warne took 63 Tests. Morne Morkel (3 for 14) also added pace and aggression in an unstoppable combination from South Africa as New Zealand slumped to their lowest total in over 66 years since crashing to 42 all out against Australia in 1946. Ranked No. 8 in Tests and above only Bangladesh, New Zealand was already facing a seventh defeat in its last 10 Tests.
