On the opening day of the 1st test match, the Sri Lankans remain dominant throughout the play and made 361-3 at stumps against an average bowling by the host Bangladesh at Galle International Stadium on Friday. Former captain Kumar Sangakkara was in the spot light with his 31st Test hundred, equaling the Sri Lankan record held by colleague Mahela Jayawardene, who will miss the two match Test series due to his broken finger. Sangakkara has also become the first batsman to went past 1,000 Test runs against Bangladesh.
Sangakkara’s wicket was claimed by Sohag Gazi on a full blooded drive, but was snapped up at short extra cover. Earlier, opener Tillakaratne Dilshan scored quick 54 runs with nine fours before failing to clear mid-off.
Afterwards, Dimuth Karunaratne was trapped leg before wicket for 41 at a total of 181. Earlier Karunaratne was retired hurt after getting struck on the elbow by fast bowler Shahadat Hossain, but returned to resume his innings after Dilshan’s wicket fell. Lahiru Thirimanne and Sangakkara played with great consistency and achieved a 124-run stand for the third wicket after which the latter fell for 142 through hitting 16 fours and three sixes.
Thirimanne and the skipper Angelo Mathews remain unbeaten on 74 and 25 respectively before calling off the day due to showers.
