On opening Day of the U.S. Open 2013, several top players performed from New York on Monday. Serena Williams started her quest to defend her title of the year’s final major, Rafael Nadal continued his white-hot play from the past month and David Ferrer, Agnieszka Radwanska and Li Na all looked set to give their best. However, Roger Federer’s opening match had to suffer delay by Mother Nature.

Venus, a two-time title holder who hasn’t made much noise in New York since a semifinal appearance in 2010, dominated on Monday, crushing No. 12 seed Kirsten Flipkens with 6-1, 6-2.

First day’s big upset came on the men’s side, as qualifier Daniel Evans defeated No. 11 seed Kei Nishikori in straight sets with 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
