On Day 2 of the fifth and final test match, England successfully took a lead of 237 runs against India at The Oval, thanks largely to Joe Root’s 92* that further exposed India’s lackluster bowling on a track where England bowlers dismissed the visitors for 148.
The hosts reached 385 for 7 by the close of day with notable contributions from skipper Alastair Cook (79), Gary Ballance (64) and Jos Buttler (45) – apart from Root – that put England in sight of a series-winning victory.
England did look shaky in the opening hour post lunch when they lost three wickets in the space of 13 runs, but Root and Buttler helped them recover with an 80-run stand, followed by an unbeaten partnership between the not-out batsmen Root and Chris Jordan (19*).
