FC EdmontonSt. Joseph High School will House FCE Residency Program

When FC Edmonton owner Tom Fath purchased an NASL expansion team his primary goal was to develop young, Canadian talent.

To that end, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, FC Edmonton will be unveiling its first-ever residency program to the public while announcing a 12-man reserve team roster.

“Our new Residency Program is designed to carry out our owner’s vision of developing and nurturing, young, talented, local players,” said Tom Leip, FC Edmonton’s general manager. “Out of all the Canadian professional soccer teams in 2011, we, by far, fielded the most Canadians; not to mention we were the only Canadian team to reach the playoffs.”

The reserve players will go to school at St. Joseph High School. Paul Kelly, player advisor at St. Joseph said the high school is the ideal institution to host Edmonton’s young soccer talent.

“St. Joseph High School offers excellent programming options and opportunities for high level athletes engaged in sports that require flexible scheduling,” Kelly said. “The flagship program, Personalized Self \Directed Learning, allows students to participate in 21st century learning/teaching methods, affording students the opportunity to work at their own pace in a customized learning environment.”

Kelly played four years of soccer at Eastern Illinois University. He was also the assistant coach of the U17 boy’s provincial team for four years and the associate men’s soccer coach at Grant MacEwan College for 12 years.

FC Edmonton’s coaching staff selected 12 players from a group of 24 invited trialists through a three-day combine process.

The reserve squad will play games in the Alberta Major Soccer League.
