Aaron Pitchcolan Scores Late to Earn Draw

It was a somewhat successful first trip to Canada for the San Antonio Scorpions after a late goal tied things up for the visitors at Clarke Stadium on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,515 fans.

The Eddies were unlucky not to be up by a few goals early in the match. A few missed opportunities from inside the 18-yard box and a controversial offside call on a Paul Craig header, and the story could have been slightly different.

The best chance for San Antonio came shortly after the Craig offside when striker Esteban Bayona looked like he was going to get a shot off but FCE defender Paul Hamilton was able to get in front of it at the last second to deflect it away harmlessly.

The Eddies broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Shaun Saiko sent a long ball into the box looking for Yashir Pinto who was able to get just enough on the ball with his head and guided it past a helpless Daryl Sattler.

Just eight minutes after the restart and FC Edmonton doubled its lead. Ilja van Leerdam intercepted a pass at midfield and made a menacing run up the left side. The midfielder crossed it in for Saiko who finished expertly putting the Eddies up 2-0.

Scorpion Josue Soto got his team back in the game in the 61st minute when he took a nice pass and finished it calmly passed Lance Parker, starting in goal for the first time since suffering a broken arm last season.

The Scorpions tried to make it interesting late. They brought on dangerous striker Pablo Campos with 20 minutes to go in search of a tying goal but it was Aaron Pitchcolan who proved to be the hero when he headed the ball passed Parker in the 82nd minute off a free kick crossed into the box.

FC Edmonton is back in action next Sunday as the Eddies host the Atlanta Silverbacks at Clarke Stadium (K.O. 2 p.m.).
