Strikers are in town for Throwback Night at Clarke

Like, oh my god, the Drillers are back and they’re taking on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Clarke Stadium on Sunday
(K.O. @ 2 p.m.).

They’re not your Daddy’s Drillers anymore however.

FC Edmonton is honouring Edmonton’s professional soccer past on Sunday by dawning the old-style, adidas, all-orange kit from the Drillers’ 1979-80 NASL season.

“It’s quite a journey into the past for me seeing the players in the old Drillers jerseys,” said FC Edmonton technical director Joe Petrone, who held a few positions with the Drillers of the 80s, including the head coaching job.

Despite the 80s look, today’s Eddies are looking to close out a three-game home stand with a win against the Strikers, the team responsible for knocking them out of the playoffs last year.

This will be the second game between the two teams this season. The Eddies opened the season in Florida with a 1-0 loss at Lockhart. Andy Herron secured the win for the Strikers with a goal in the 60th minute.

“The Strikers are a good team but they’re only five points ahead of us in the standings and we have a game in hand,” said FC Edmonton captain Chris Kooy. “This is an important game for us. The fans are coming out and supporting us and we want to give them a good game on Sunday.”
