Canadian Soccer AssociationCanada has announced that it will face Japan in a Women’s U-20 International Friendly match on 13 August, one week before it opens the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Japan 2012. The international match will take place in Fukushima, Japan at the Azuma Sports Park Athletic Stadium. The match will serve as a last test for Canadian U-20 coach Andrew Olivieri and his team.

“We appreciate this invitation as Japan will provide a really good test for this team,” said Olivieri. “It was very important for us to face quality opposition in advance of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, especially an opponent from Asia.”

Along with a preparatory match against Asian opponent Japan, Canada is already scheduled to face a pair of European opponents in July: Italy on 14 July and Switzerland on 20 July.

Canada will participate in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup from 19 August to 8 September 2012. Sixteen teams will participate in the summer tournament, with Canada set to face Argentina, Norway and Korea DPR in the group phase. Canada’s three group matches are 20 August against Argentina in Kobe, 23 August against Norway in Kobe, and 27 August against Korea DPR in Saitama.

Earlier this year, Canada qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Japan 2012 with a silver-medal performance at the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. This year marks Canada’s fifth participation in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with its best performance a silver-medal finish at Canada 2002. In two years time, Canada will host the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014.
