Canada has completed its pre-Olympic preparations in Switzerland following the two-match Match World Women’s Cup 2012. Canada finished second in the tournament after a win and a loss. Canada won 2-0 over New Zealand on July 14and lost 2-1 to Brazil on July 17.
Canada came up just short in its bid to win the Match World Women’s Cup 2012 as they fell 2-1 to Brazil in Savièse, Switzerland. Christine Sinclair’s equaliser in the final moments seemed as if it would send the game to kicks, but just seconds after the restart Canada conceded a late winner to Brazilian substitute Grazielle. The match was played on July 17 1at the Stade de Savièse.
Sinclair’s goal was her 17th this year which is a new Canadian record for goals in a year. It was the 11th match in which Sinclair scored this year, also a new national record.
Formiga’s volleyed-goal in the dying minutes of the first half seemed to be the winner as the Canadians couldn’t find a way past Brazil. That was until added time when Sinclair equalised.
Brazil controlled the game for the bulk of the first half and was ultimately rewarded in the 44th minute. Formiga found the appropriate space in the 18-yard box on a Marta corner kick from the right side. Formiga made a little hop and volleyed home the corner with her right foot.
In the final moments of second half stoppage time, Sinclair capitalized on a mistake by Brazilian goalkeeper Andreia to equalize but Canada couldn’t hold onto the tie which would have forced kicks from the penalty mark to determine a tournament winner.
Almost immediately after the restart, Marta led an attack from the left-hand side and her pinpoint cross was poked in by Grazielle.
Before the hectic last few minutes it seemed like the one goal would stand up as it took a while but Canada finally started to create a few chances with under half an hour remaining.
In the 61st minute, Christine Sinclair led an attack on the left side. After holding the ball up in the Brazilian end, Sinclair knocked the ball back for an onrushing Melissa Tancredi but her first-time shot just missed the left post.
Just a few minutes later midfielder Diana Matheson had a go from the right side just outside the box, but it was right at Brazilian goalkeeper Andreia.
Sinclair had a chance after a long free kick in the 72nd minute. The ball came to the forward on the right side but her tight angle shot was parried wide by Andreia.
Canada will compete in the London 2012 Olympics from 25 July to 9 August. Canada will open the tournament on 25 July in Coventry against Japan.
“It is a great place in which we have been able to get the right balance of work, rest and play,” said Canadian head coach John Herdman. “What a classic match today. It was one of those matches that will really set you up for a big tournament.”
With an added-time winner against Canada, Brazil won the Match World Women’s Cup 2012. The final ranking was Brazil first, Canada second, New Zealand third, and Colombia fourth. The best goalkeeper of the tournament was Brazil’s Andreia while the best player of the tournament was Canada’s Diana Matheson.
