Ronaldo to play for Portugal

The much-debated World Cup and transfer did not prevent 38-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo from being called up for Portugal. Despite his controversial move to Saudi Arabia and a rift with former national coach Fernando Santos during the tournament in Qatar, new coach Roberto Martínez has included Ronaldo, along with fellow veterans Pepe (40) and Rui Patrício (35), in his squad.

During the World Cup, Ronaldo was substituted in the final group match against South Korea, resulting in a heated argument with Santos. He was relegated to a reserve role in the subsequent matches against Switzerland and Morocco, with Portugal being eliminated in the quarter-finals by the latter.

Following Santos’ departure, Martínez was appointed as his successor and remained steadfast in his decision to select Ronaldo for the team. “Cristiano Ronaldo is a highly committed player,” he stated. “He brings experience and is an invaluable asset to the team. Age is not a factor for me.”

Portugal’s first qualifying match for the 2024 European Championship will take place on March 23 against Liechtenstein in Lisbon, followed by an away game against Luxembourg three days later.
