The 20-year-old Canadian was defeated 7-5,7-6(7) by World No. 5 David Ferrer of Spain. The match, which lasted one hour, 43 minutes, was the third meeting between the two players in 2011 and resulted in a third victory for Ferrer. Raonic was up a break in both sets and held a set point in the second set tiebreak, but was unable to convert his chances. Raonic acquitted himself well against the feisty Spaniard in just his second tournament back on Tour following hip surgery, hitting 11 aces, 0 double faults and winning 78 percent of his first serve points.
Ferrer posted previous wins over Raonic this year at the Australian Open in January and on clay in Monte-Carlo this spring. Raonic’s next tournament will be the If Stockholm Open in Sweden, an ATP 250 event beginning next week.
