World No. 4 Maria Sharapova of Russia has confirmed her participation in the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, which will be held from August 4-13, 2012 at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.

“Christmas has come early for our team and especially for tennis fans in Montreal,” said Rogers Cup tournament director Eugène Lapierre. “Anytime we can announce that a player of Maria’s (Sharapova) calibre and stature within the sport, it is a good day.”

Sharapova is a three-time Grand Slam champion and one of the biggest female athletes in the world. A former World No. 1, the 24-year-old was a finalist at the Rogers Cup in 2009 and will be making her first appearance in Montreal since 2008.

“I am happy that I was able to include the Rogers Cup on my schedule for next year,” said Sharapova. Montreal is a dynamic, diverse city and I look forward to going back.”

In 2011, Sharapova enjoyed her best season in several years. She won two titles to bring her career total to 24, reached the final at Wimbledon and was a semifinalist at Roland-Garros.

Sharapova joins fellow Top 10 players Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Vera Zvonareva and Marion Bartoli on the Rogers Cup entry list for next August.

In 2012, for the first time in tournament history, main draw play at the Rogers Cup will begin on Tuesday August 7 with the singles final scheduled for Monday August 13 at 7 p.m. in the evening.
