Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) has reached the semifinals of his first tournament of the 2012 tennis season at the Aircel Chennai Open in Chennai, India, an ATP World Tour 250 event.
The 21-year-old Canadian defeated Dudi Sela of Israel 7-6(4), 6-3 on Friday to advance to his fifth career ATP semifinal. Raonic served 15 aces and saved three break points, including two while serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set, en route to the win. In his four previous semifinal appearances, Raonic holds an even 2-2 record which includes wins at San Jose and Memphis in 2011.
In Saturday’s semifinals Raonic, seeded fourth in the tournament and ranked no. 31 in the world, will meet the winner of the quarter-final contest between world no. 10 Nicolas Almagro of Spain and Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita.
