Tennis CanadaFour Canadians were in action on Tuesday at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC), Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) were trying to reach the second round of the first Grand Slam event of the 2012 tennis season.

Wozniak was the first Canadian to take to the courts and took on China’s Shuai Zhang. She reached the second round of the Australian Open main draw for the first time in her career thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Wozniak will meet the no. 27 seed, Maria Kirilenko of Russia, in the second round on Thursday.

Next up was Raonic, who also made an impressive debut at this year’s tournament thanks to a straight forward 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 win over Italy’s Filippo Volandri. The world no. 25 continued his dominance on serve, hitting 13 aces and not being broken once. In fact, Raonic has not lost serve yet in 60 games of his ATP World Tour matches in 2012. The 21-year-old, who reached the fourth round in Melbourne last year, will face Philipp Petzschner of Germany in the second round. The two players met twice in 2011 with both winning one confrontation.

Dubois caused an upset, taking out world no. 50 Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. This marks the third time that Dubois has overcome the first round hurdle at a Grand Slam and she will now try to advance past the third round at a Major for the first time when she takes on the winner of the match between no. 30 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany and Australian Bojana Bousic.

For her part, Marino was not able to join her compatriots in round two. She lead 4-1 in the first set before falling 6-4, 6-2 to Greta Arn of Hungary.
