Canadian falls in the first round to Montanes

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) kicked off his clay court season on Monday in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event currently undewray in Monte-Carlo, Monaco.

Raonic faced a tough task in his opening match going up against 31-year-old Spanish veteran Albert Montanes who was ranked no. 22 in the world just two years ago. It took some time for Raonic to find his bearings on the clay as he quickly trailed by a set and a break at 2-6, 1-3.

The Canadian was able to turn the match around by winning five five straight games to force a third set. However, Montanes was able to regroup and come away with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory to set up a second round encounter with seventh-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.

Raonic was playing his first match since being forced to withdraw in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami because of an ankle injury. His next tournament will be the ATP 500 event in Barcelona next week.
