Paul Hahn & Co., Torontos oldest piano store, providing complete piano service since 1913, will present an intimate solo piano performance in the showroom of its Yonge Street heritage building by the award winning and internationally renowned jazz pianist David Braid on Wednesday May 30th at 6:30pm. Macleans Magazine called David A Jazz Genius To Call Our Own. His genius is increasingly recognized and appreciated both at home and abroad. Davids most recent album, Verge won him his second Juno, taking home the award for Best Traditional Jazz Album at the 2012 Juno Awards in Ottawa, Ontario. Verge beat albums by such well-known jazz artists as Dave Young, Mike Murley (with whom David performs) and Oliver Jones. There is a little bit of Paul Hahn & Co. on the record too, as the stores 1896 Steinway & Sons New York Concert Grand is featured, and was recorded in the stores basement. The piano that David has selected for his performance is a gem: a rare, golden-era Steinway & Sons Model M piano with Louis XVI manufactured in Steinways New York Factory in 1935. This piano has been painstakingly restored to factory condition by Paul Hahn & Co.s team of expert Piano Restorers. While the piano is only 57 long, and is generally considered a Baby Grand, there is nothing small about it musically. Capable of shimmering highs, room-shaking bass, and the dynamic range that one would expect to hear from a much larger piano, this Steinway is special. It is being offered for sale at $65,000 CDN. A similar piano new from Steinway & Sons retails for between $100,000 and $120,000 USD. Guests at the performance will be greeted with a complimentary glass of wine, and have an opportunity to peruse some of Paul Hahn & Co.s collection of high quality restored Grand and Upright pianos and meet Alex Hahn, President, and Jeremy Elliott, Sales Manager. Tours of the stores workshop will be provided to any interested parties. Pianos currently being restored for sale and for private customers will be also be on display. Some guests will be surprised to learn that the store doesnt sell any new pianos. Paul Hahn & Co. judges each piano on its own merits, rather than commit to a dealer relationship with a manufacturer. Torontonians may not be aware of the rich piano history that surrounds them. Whether it was because of the massive domestic piano making industry, with names like Heintzman, Nordheimer & Mason & Risch being well known to previous generations, or that every imported brand came through the city, Toronto is unique in the world of pianos. Paul Hahn & Co. specializes in the restoration of vintage, high quality pianos, with a special focus on the Steinway & Sons, Heintzman & Co., and Nordheimer brands. Free 1 hr. parking is available on the western end of Gibson Avenue and in the laneway immediately north of Ramsden Park. The store is also conveniently located opposite Rosedale Subway Station. The store is open Monday to Saturday from 9am 6pm, and by appointment at any other time. As a special thank you to guests, door prizes will be awarded, and include coffee from the Yonge & Roxborough Starbucks location, a gift certificate from The Rebel House & a free piano tuning by a Paul Hahn & Co. technician. David Braid will be available following the performance to meet and greet the audience and sign copies of his albums. There is no charge to attend, but we do encourage our guests to support live music by purchasing one of David Braids albums that will be available for sale.
