Los Angeles-based soul musician Tara Priya will perform with her Motown band at “Wednesdays Go Pop!” at Supermarket in Toronto on June 27, 2012, performing unreleased material from her forthcoming album. On the (electric blue, suede) heels of Tara’s recent stardust performances in Toronto and Singapore’s Music Matters Live, this gig is a welcome respite for Tara in her favorite Canadian city.

Stardust surrounds—but no dust settles on Tara Priya. The soul diva’s recent performances include dates in India (performing with Imogen Heap at NH7Weekender), London (to perform twice on BBC London 94.9), Austin’s SXSW and several dates for Billboard Japan in Tokyo and Osaka.

Tara’s latest EP, Goodbye, Romeo (2012), fully captures her juxtapositions. The 23-year-old’s lyrics are a brazen mix of pop and poetry: “Call the priest, not the doctor / ‘cause his ship is going under,” as often as they are raw: “Save those finer feelings / for your pretty blonde girls / you never loved me, and you know it / and I don’t want to know you.” It doesn’t hurt that those words are delivered by “fantastic, timeless vocals” (CityBeat) and what BBC London calls “one of those voices you just need to hear.”

With catchy rhythms, snaps, claps, and vibrant horn lines, Tara’s blues tinged, soul- inflected music is swathed in nostalgia for the golden age of Motown and Stax Records, yet undeniably modern.

““Rollin’” is the sweet soul fruit of her endeavors, indeed a rollin’ dose of Memphis R&B blended with just enough hip-hop to keep it current. A great record. And did we mention Tara’s got a killer voice? Keep your eyes and ears open for this young lady. ” – Michael Verity, CBS Radio
