The  award-winning, critically acclaimed ProArteDanza returns to Fleck Dance Theatre with Season 2012 for 4 performances only from October 3-6, 2012 as part Harbourfront Centre's NextSteps.

Artistic Director Roberto Campanella, a former dancer with the National Ballet of Canada, draws upon talent from the worlds of both classical ballet and contemporary dance in a programme that is a showcase of celebrated works from the ProArteDanza repertoire (including a work from Kevin O'Day, Artistic Director of Mannheim Ballet) as well as the world premiere of the next exciting co-creation by Campanella and Robert Glumbek, ProArteDanza Artistic Associate.

Blending beauty and all-out athleticism, Season 2012 features an ensemble of Toronto's most accomplished and sought after contemporary dancers including Johanna Bergfelt, Kristen Dennis, Tyler Gledhill, Robert Glumbek, Mami Hata, Louis Laberge-Côté, Ryan Lee, Delphine Leroux, Erin Poole, Anisa Tejpar and Brendan Wyatt.

Campanella and Glumbek won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography for …in between… which premiered in Season 2010. Season 2011 included the premiere of Fractals, choreographed by Guillaume Côté, which was nominated for Outstanding Choreography. Season 2012 promises to be a spectacular evening with:

o      The world premiere of Breath (working title), an ensemble piece choreographed by Roberto Campanella and Robert Glumbek.  This complex and emotive work will make you rethink the very breath you take. Performed by Johanna Bergfelt, Kristen Dennis, Mami Hata, Louis Laberge-Côté, Ryan Lee, Delphine Leroux, Anisa Tejpar and Brendan Wyatt.

o        Decorum (2005), a passionate duet choreographed by Roberto Campanella featuring Tyler Gledhill and Kristen Dennis, set to music by Arvo Pärt.

o  Kevin O'Day's duet We WillŠ (2008), set to the music of Handel's Lascia Ch'io Pianga and showcasing the incomparable artistry of Robert Glumbek and Mami Hata.

o The return of Beethoven's 9th – 1st Movement (2009), co-choreographed by Campanella and Glumbek. This virtuoso piece about dance and music ignites both performers and audiences alike. Performed by Johanna Bergfelt, Tyler Gledhill, Louis Laberge-Côté, Ryan Lee, Delphine Leroux, Erin Poole, Anisa Tejpar and Brendan Wyatt.

ProArteDanza began as a collaborative venture between artistic director Roberto Campanella and artistic associate Robert Glumbek to found a company with the guiding principal of "passion in performance," along with a commitment to break down the barriers separating the worlds of ballet and modern dance. Since 2004, ProArteDanza has been showcasing the brightest talents from both ballet and modern dance backgrounds to critical acclaim and sold out houses. Through its fusion of ballet and modern dance, ProArteDanza offers dancers the opportunity to continue to share their artistry and inspire audiences with programming that pushes the boundaries of technical skill and artistic expression. Roberto Campanella – Artistic Director / Choreographer
Born and raised in Rome, Roberto Campanella trained at the Scuola Italiana di Danza Contemporanea. In 1985, Roberto joined the Compagnia Italiana di Danza Contemporanea and later joined the prestigious Aterballetto. In 1993 he joined The National Ballet of Canada where he was soon promoted to Soloist and was cast in many classical and contemporary roles. Roberto made his choreographic debut at The National Ballet of Canada's 1995 Choreographic Workshop and, upon retiring from the National Ballet in 1996, Roberto trained from the National Ballet School's Teacher Training Program from which he graduated with distinction. He is now a sought-after guest teacher for companies such as The National Ballet of Canada and Stuttgart Ballet as well as companies in Italy, Korea and Japan. Although Roberto choreographs predominantly for ProArteDanza, he also choreographs a wide variety of commissioned works for companies at home and abroad. In 2001, Roberto was nominated for the Bonnie Bird Choreography Award in London. In 2007, he received the Fellowship Initiative Award from the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of the New York City Ballet, and in 2008, he was awarded a Chalmers Professional Development Grant. Campanella's first full-length work Alice in Wonderland premiered at Ballet Augsburg in Germany in October 2008.  Roberto was awarded the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography with co-choreographer Robert Glumbek for Š in betweenŠ, which premiered at ProArteDanza's Season 2010.

Robert Glumbek – Artistic Associate / Choreographer
Upon graduation from Bytom State Ballet School in Poland, Robert Glumbek joined The Great Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Warsaw as a soloist where he worked with choreographers such as John Neumeier, Maurice Bejart, Hans Van Manen, John Butler, and Constantine Siergiejew. In 1987, Glumbek came to Canada and worked for a variety of companies – including Theatre Ballet of Canada in Ottawa with Larry Gradus, the Judith Marcuse Company in Vancouver; and Myth Productions with Learie McNichols  – before dancing with Desrosiers Dance Theatre from 1990-2000 where he was instrumental in the creation of many roles. Robert worked with the Mannheim Ballett as dancer and ballet master from 2002 to 2004 and then returned to Canada in 2004 to work as an independent artist and choreographer. In between residences with the major companies, Glumbek has appeared in works independently, most notably: Greece's 1998 Gala des Etoiles festival with Karen Kain, directed by Dominique Dumais; the role of Mars, Canadian Opera Company's 2001 production of Venus and Adonis, choreographed by Serge Bennathan; and 32 Silver Pieces, DanceMakers, choreographed by Marie Josee Cartier (Dora winner). Robert has worked with choreographers: Kevin O'Day, Bill James, Peter Chin, Michael Downing (Dancefront), Dominique Dumais, Christopher House, Serge Bennathan, Holly Small, Learie McNicolls, Tedd Robinson, and in many unforgettable works from ProArteDanza's repertoire. Robert's first choreography was a project for Finland's 20th anniversary celebration of renowned actor Hannu Huska: An adapted story by Mika Vatari based on the Pharo Ahknaton. His first creations as co-choreographer with Roberto Campanella (pre-ProArteDanza) include: Nothing Twice, inspired by poet Nobel winner Szymborska; and the first incarnation of Nine Sentiments with poetry read by Michael Ondaatje, which became the catalyst for forming ProArteDanza. Robert became Artistic Associate of ProArteDanza in 2004 where he has created a number of acclaimed original works.  Robert has also created for Mannheim Ballett, princess productions, Toronto Dance Theatre, Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts, CCDT, Arts Umbrella, Ryerson University and York University. Robert was a finalist in the Hanover Choreographic Competition and in the Stuttgart Choreographic Competition, is a recipient of the Now Magazine award for Best Dancer of the Year (2006), and has been honoured with both the K.M. Hunter Artist Award and the Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award. Robert is a four-time Dora Mavor Moore nominee, and was the co-recipient with Roberto Campanella for their chorography of Š in between Š in 2010.  Robert has most recently set a new work on Emily Molnar's Ballet BC, which premiered in November of 2011, and he will be creating a new work for Mannheim Ballet in the spring of 2012.

Kevin O'Day – Choreographer
The American Kevin O'Day was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He received his early dance training at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. After one year, he joined the Joffrey II; the following year he became a member of the main company of the Joffrey Ballet. In the winter of 1984, O'Day began his long association with choreographer Twyla Tharp. From 1988 to 1991, he was a soloist with American Ballet Theatre, where he performed in a wide variety of featured roles. In 1991 he joined William Forsythe's Frankfurt Ballet, and from 1992 until 1995 he was a member of Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project. During that time he appeared frequently as a guest with the New York City Ballet. In 1994 Mikhail Baryshnikov invited O'Day to choreograph a new work for the White Oak Dance Project, marking his choreographic debut. In 1998, in collaboration with composer John King, O'Day formed his own company called O'Day Dances. In 2002, he was appointed artistic director of Kevin O'Day-Ballett Mannheim at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in Germany. Other companies that have commissioned his work include New York City Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Stuttgart Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet, Ballet Argentino and The Royal Danish Ballet. In October 2009, O'Day choreographed his 50th ballet, which was simultaneously his first full-length narrative ballet: Hamlet. Based on William Shakespeare's famous play, O'Day created Hamlet for the Stuttgart Ballet, it was performed by the National Ballet of Canada in their 2011/2012 60th Anniversary Season.
