Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center (Redondo Beach, CA)

Once called “the Simon and Garfunkel of Hawaii,” Barry Flanagan and Ron Kuala’au are the duo known as HAPA, one of the most successful recording groups ever to come out of the Aloha State. They’re back in L.A. for a live show featuring new arrangements of their biggest hits, along with hula performances, and lots of Hawaiian food — including shave ice — available for purchase. HAPA’s beautiful and serene music evokes the cultural blend that is their native island of Maui. Rooted in the traditional chants and slack-key guitar of the Hawaiian islands, their style also incorporates Portuguese and Spanish ballads, the choral harmonies of the early missionaries, and a touch of American acoustic folk-rock. The pair’s self-titled debut CD came out in 1993, and soon became the top-selling Hawaiian music album ever recorded by a duo or group. They’ve continued performing and recording ever since, winning critical acclaim in Hawaii and selling out shows from Tokyo to New York and beyond.
