London’s internationally acclaimed theater troupe Cheek by Jowl comes to UCLA with its new production of Jacobean-era dramatist John Ford’s timeless tragedy ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore. Full of intrigue, incest and political machination, Ford’s 17th century revenge tragedy has many of the elements of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: forbidden love, a meddling nurse, a complicit friar and a tragic, bloody reversal of fortune. But in ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, the star-crossed lovers are actually brother and sister, adding a lurid twist to this poetic, passionate masterpiece. Formed in 1981, Cheek by Jowl has performed in over 300 cities across the globe.
