Carpenter Performing Arts Center, CSULB (Long Beach, CA)
The Kronos Quartet — now celebrating an amazing 40 years as the world’s most famous contemporary-classical ensemble — performs their stunning multimedia work, accompanied by the CSULB University Choir. Originally commissioned by NASA, this breathtaking musical exploration of the universe is the product of a long collaboration between the quartet and renowned minimalist composer Terry Riley. Sun Rings incorporates sounds harvested from recordings of deep space, as well as breathtaking video images by eminent visual designer Willie Williams. Kronos, featuring violinists David Harrington and John Sherba, cellist Jeffrey Zeigler and violist Hank Dutt, have sold more than 1.5 million records, and recently won the prestigious Polar Music Prize for “revolutionizing the potential of the string quartet genre when it comes to both style and content.”
