Carpenter Performing Arts Center, CSULB (Long Beach, CA)
Singer-songwriter Susan Werner started off in folk: Her first five albums include some of the most critically acclaimed folk music recorded in the ’90s. But in 2004, she made a radical departure with her album I Can’t Be New, where she explored a jazzier sound, reminiscent of torch songs and Tin Pan Alley. No matter the genre, however, Werner continues to wow audiences with the depth of her skills, which include excellent musicianship, writing brainy lyrics and emotionally pitch-perfect singing. The New Yorker credited her with bringing “literacy and wit back to popular song,” while the Chicago Tribune simply named her “one of the most innovative songwriters working today.” Now Werner brings her captivating live show to the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, where she will perform her new songs in the old way — with class, talent and unmatchable panache.
