Please join this participatory eco-art project! According to BirdLife International, over 1,300 bird species globally are now threatened with extinction. Toronto eco-artist Jessica Marion Barr is currently creating an art project that involves folding origami cranes to commemorate these endangered bird species. Members of the community are invited to join Jessica in adding to the flock by folding their own paper cranes for the species that remain on the list. Participants will choose a species and say a short statement of hope while folding their crane, and then label that crane with the name of their chosen species. This event is an opportunity for children, families, and community members of all ages to gather to learn about and discuss issues of the environment and stewardship. It is also a chance to share different cultural practices of healing, as the tradition of folding 1,000 origami cranes while saying a prayer for someones healing is a Japanese tradition. This free, drop-in day-long activity is open to participants of all ages. The cranes will be added to my ongoing project, which will be exhibited in Toronto later this year. Participants who wish to share their names and contact information with me will be credited as co-creators of the artwork, and will be invited to view the completed 1,000-crane installation at its official opening reception. Place and time: Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre (220 Cowan Ave, just south of Queen, one block west of Brock). From noon to 4 it will be in the main recreation room and from 4 to 8 it will be across the hall in the “Sistering” room — both of these should be easy to spot when you enter the building, and there will be a poster indicating where the activity is taking place.
