The ultra-private man The New York Times called “the most important American artist of his generation” steps into the limelight for a rare in-person conversation at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Visual artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney just might be the recipient of more praise than any other artist now living. Artforum put him on the cover when he was just 24 years old. The Guardian called the Cremaster Cycle, his world-famous series of five feature films, “one of the most imaginative and brilliant achievements in the history of avant-garde cinema.” Now this truly seminal figure sits down with longtime collaborator Gabe Bartalos, the legendary Hollywood special effects wizard. Together Bartalos, who worked on the Cremaster Cycle as well as Godzilla and the six Leprechaun films, and Barney will discuss their thoughts, processes and motivations as artists and innovators. Before the event, the CSULB fall exhibition Gabe Bartalos: Abhorrence and Obsession will open at the University Art Museum.
