Nate Holden Performing Arts Center (Los Angeles, CA)

"Paul Robeson"

Phillip Hayes Dean’s Paul Robeson is a powerful chronicle of the life of an authentic American hero, from his New Jersey childhood to his globetrotting pursuits against racism in his adult life. A two-time All-American football player, member of Phi Beta Kappa, valedictorian of Rutgers University and Columbia Law School-trained lawyer, Robeson faced the virulent racism prevalent in 20th century society. He was denied the pursuit of his profession, blacklisted and even had his passport revoked for eight years. It’s Robeson’s unyielding fight against injustice and racism around the world that shines as a beacon to those struggling to make this world a better place. Paul Robeson starred James Earl Jones when it opened on Broadway to great acclaim (and a fair amount of controversy) in 1978. This revival at Ebony Repertory Theater was directed by Phillip Hayes Dean himself, who passed away shortly after its first run in April of this year.
