On Ensemble Brings New Life to Ancient Japanese Music
Aratani Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)

Recognized as relentless innovators, L.A.’s On Ensemble has made a name for itself by infusing the powerful rhythms of taiko — Japanese ensemble drumming — with overtone singing, odd meter grooves and soaring melodies. At the quartet’s Aratani World Series performance, you’ll hear their modern spin on the ancient instruments of taiko. They’ll be joined by fellow taiko artist Kaoru Watanabe, as well as Japanese koto & shamisen player Sumie Kaneko, whose sound bridges Japanese traditional music and the New York jazz and avant-garde scene.
