How to Write Off Your Profession Practice: Tax Workshop for Artists, Designers and Creatives

Hosted by Brian Borts, Chartered Accountant (specializing in the arts and entertainment industry)

It’s almost Tax Season again! A particularly perplexing and sometimes stressful time as an artist, designer or creative. Most visual artists and/or designers are considered self-employed when filing their taxes. In a legal sense this means that your business as a creative worker, and you as an individual taxpayer, are one and the same. By understanding the tax system and how if effects your practice, you’ll pay less tax and be less likely to fall prey to erroneous tax information. Also, as an artist, there are a number of tax deductions that are unique to you!

No materials are required. A notebook or laptop might be useful to take notes.

Topics Covered include:

Harmonized Sales Tax (HST)

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP’S)

Legal Entities

Employment vs. Self-Employment

Self- Employment Expenses

Filing Requirements

Record Keeping

Canada Revenue Agency audits

The workshop is free and open to anyone, but please RSVP to brette@xpace.info to reserve a spot.
