Family is always at the core of our sense of security, wellbeing and understanding our unique personal history. While all very subjective, it’s our family that remains our link to community, hence the great importance of establishing harmony amongst our nearest and dearest first and foremost. Nichiren Buddhism maintains that we share a very special bond with our family, which transcends birth and death and enables us to deepen our appreciation and compassion for others. Everything around us, including work and family relationships is the reflection of our inner lives and everything is perceived through the self and alters according to the individual’s inner state of life. Thus, if we change ourselves our circumstances will inevitably change to derive even greater joy within our family, our community and within ourselves.

As explained by Daisaku Ikeda, president of the Soka Gakkai International, “The family is said to be the oldest form of human community. Nowhere is the impact of the crisis of life, heart and spirit felt more intensely than in the family. Parent-child relations, and family ties in general, differ from other human relations in that they are essentially not of our choosing. They should be recognized as something that issues from the depths of our being and as such, they represent the most real and vital connections.”

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a lay Buddhist movement linking more than 12 million people around the world. SGI practitioners aim to create value in any circumstances and contribute to the wellbeing of others. Their practice sparks a process of ongoing inner transformation and empowerment known as “human revolution.” The promotion of peace, culture and education is central to SGI’s activities.
