Heritage Park (Santa Fe Springs, CA)
Before Phantom or Evita or Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar first got the world humming the music of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice. More than 40 years later, the world hasn’t stopped, as the Santa Fe Springs Community Playhouse stages an outdoor production of the hugely popular rock opera. An unprecedented commercial and artistic success when it debuted on Broadway in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar retells the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot. Chart-topping songs such as “Everything’s Alright,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and the high-octane title number dramatically highlight the struggles of Jesus’s final days before his violent crucifixion and ultimate redemption. Remember to bring snacks as you “picnic in the park” during this al fresco production at the beautiful Heritage Park.
