GUEST CONDUCTOR TO LEAD FLANDERS FIELDS

Musical gems old and new will sparkle at Sinfonia Toronto’s next Masterpiece Series concert on Thursday, November 12, taking place at Glenn Gould Studio. Polish guest conductor Jan Milosz Zarzycki will make his Canadian debut in Toronto and Sinfonia vioilinist Alex Toskov will be heard in Chausson’s Poem, one of the most romantic works written for the violin. The concert will include Canadian composer John Burge’s JUNO winning ‘Flanders Fields Reflections’ and two popular works by Telemann and Vivaldi.

Jan Miłosz Zarzycki has studied conducting with Marek Pijarowski at the Music Academy in Wrocław, gaining a diploma with distinction in 1994. He continued his studies in Vienna and Berlin, under the guidance of such famous conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur and Claudio Abbado. He has conducted most of Poland’s symphony orchestras. Foreign tours have taken him to Germany, France, Austria, Holland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, Macedonia, the United States, Portugal, Mexico, Norway, Belgium, Lithuania and Belarus. He has recorded ten albums.

A member of Sinfonia Toronto violinist Alex Toskov has performed as soloist with the Serbian Radio Symphony, served as concertmaster of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra in 2006 and of the Deutsch-Skandinavische Jugend Philharmonie in 2009. Originally from Serbia, in Canada Mr. Toskov won the Glenn Gould School’s 2011 Chamber Music Competition.

Now in its 17th season, Sinfonia Toronto has toured in United States and twice in Europe, receiving glowing reviews. It has released four CD’s, including a JUNO Award winner, and performs in many Ontario cities. Its extensive repertoire includes all the major string orchestra works of the 18th through 21st centuries, and it has premiered many new works. Under the baton of Nurhan Arman the orchestra’s performances present outstanding international guest artists and prominent Canadian musicians.
