Highways Performance Space and Gallery (Santa Monica, CA)
Hailed as a “Woman at the Helm” by GO! Magazine, Maria Bauman is a dancer, choreographer, community organizer and one-time associate artistic director of the contemporary dance troupe Urban Bush Women. She mixes muscles, beads of sweat and exertion with surrender and softness to produce works that The New York Times has called “texturally rich in its gestural language, and beautifully performed.” For Grace Is High and Low, Bauman pairs her solo performance with two world premieres: Limbs, a Portuguese and English spoken and danced piece featuring Brazilian-born, L.A.-based guest mover Marina Magalhães alongside MBDance company members, and Attend Me, inspired by the writings and philosophy of Audre Lorde, who described herself as a “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.”
