Hollywood Bowl (Hollywood, CA)

LA Phil: Gershwin & Berlioz

LA Philharmonic closes out the Hollywood Bowl’s classical season with a performance of two iconic works: Gershwin’s Concerto in F and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet brings his lively style to Gershwin’s jazzy concerto under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado. Amazingly written before Gershwin had received formal instruction in composition, the piece draws heavily on jazz and was later featured in the classic musical An American In Paris. The evening culminates with one of LA Philharmonic’s signature pieces, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, an extravagant epic that tells the story of a gifted but lovesick artist who, in despair, has taken an overdose of opium. Inspired by the composer’s own unrequited infatuation with a Shakespearean actress, Symphonie Fantastique is equal parts autobiography and hallucination. It’s sure to be an enchanting night of music under the stars.
