Conejo Players Theatre (Thousand Oaks, CA)
Surf’s up — and murder’s afoot — as Psycho Beach Party hangs 10 in Thousand Oaks. Playwright Charles Busch (Die, Mommie, Die!, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife) mashes up ’50s psychodramas, ’60s surfer films and ’80s slasher horror flicks into a truly madcap comedy. Chicklet Forrest desperately wants to be a part of the cool-kid crowd on Malibu Beach, circa 1962. This ambition is slightly complicated by the fact that her personality is not so much “split” as shattered among several personalities, including a black check-out girl, an elderly talk show host, a male model and an accounting firm. When one of her personalities goes rogue, Chicklet — and everyone around her — is in for some rough waters in this hilarious romp at Conejo Players Theatre.
