Duncan Sheik & Suzanne Vega

Duncan Sheik came to fame in the late ’90s thanks to his hit single “Barely Breathing” and its modern take on the singer-songwriter style. He’s since put out an eclectic mix of work, including the 2011 release of Covers 80’s, a collection of his personalized takes on a number of ’80s covers like “What Is Love?” and “Hold Me Now.” In addition to his solo career, the multitalented Sheik has also been recognized for his musical contributions to the Broadway sensation Spring Awakening, which earned him two Tony Awards and a Grammy. Like Bob Dylan did a generation before her, Suzanne Vega didn’t so much resuscitate folk music as reinvent it completely. A songwriter of poetic genius, Vega got her start in the Greenwich Village clubs of the early ’80s. Later catapulted to fame by her sophomore album, Solitude Standing, and its hit singles “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner,” Vega was the first in a new group of female stars like Tracy Chapman, Shawn Colvin and the Indigo Girls. Ever a trailblazer, more than 20 years later, she continues to write and perform profoundly affecting music.
