Hermosa Beach Playhouse (Hermosa Beach, CA)
The West Coast Jazz Heritage Series strikes up the big band in honor of the husband-and-wife team of “cool jazz” songbird June Christy and multi-instrumentalist Bob Cooper. The couple first met when the chanteuse fronted the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the ’40s, topping the charts with tracks like “Tampico” and “It’s Been a Long, Long Time.” She went on to find solo success with her lush, velvety vocals singing such classics as her signature song “Something Cool.” This all-star tribute — hitting the stage at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse — will feature a host of West Coast jazz giants, including jazz clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski, vocalist Stephanie Nakasian and the Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra. You’ll hear them celebrating Cooper and Christy’s musical collaborations, including music from June’s Got Rhythm, Do Re Mi and more.
