Longing for some April enchantment? Come join Frolick theatre and friends as we celebrate the 30th birthday of the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies, a Californiabased notforprofit organization, with a wild weekend of PSYCHEDELIC DINNER THEATRE inspired by The Chelsea Hotel of the 1970’s. Each show includes a lineup of live music, art, and speakers followed by an explosive performance of Sam Shepard and Patti Smith’s play “COWBOY MOUTH”, starring Toronto based actor/producer Matthew Krist and performance artist Shawna Willow, under the direction of Maria Wodzinska of Paris’ esteemed Lecoq school. The Friday and Saturday performances will feature an immersive, postshow live music happening where audience members are encouraged to put on a costume, rid the role of spectator and become part of the experience.
The byproduct of an extended 1971 tryst between Smith and Shepard in New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel, COWBOY MOUTH is a surreal, oneact emotional somersault that explores a day in the life of an eccentricpairof mismatchedloversastheynegotiatethemesofart, love, identityanddisasterallwithin the confines of their squalid hotel room, having become a metaphor for the universe at large. Cavale, a former mental patient with a penchant for French romanticism, has kidnapped Slim off the streets with the intention to transform him into the ultimate rock and roll saviour. The only problem? They fall in love.
The weekend itself will be an immersive experience which also serves as the Toronto chapter of M.A.P.S fundraising initiative GLOBAL PSYCHEDELIC DINNERS, a worldwide series of gatherings designed to mark the organization’s 30th birthday and raise funds for M.A.P.S Phase 3 trials of MDMAassisted psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Throughout the month of April, these dinners will be happening all over the world as part of a global movement intended to enhance public understanding of the risks and beneficial uses of psychedelics for science, healing, spirituality, creativity, and personal growth
