New Zealand, after batting first on day one of 1st Test match, have managed to get off on a strong start but threw away a few wickets as batsmen failed to capitalize on good starts. West Indies bowled well but fielding failed to support it, though Narine managed to boost their morale by taking a few wickets late in the day.
Ross Taylor decided to bat first after winning toss. The opening pair of Martin Guptill and Daniel Flynn took off an intelligent start as they hit the bad deliveries and avoided the good ones. West Indies had a frustrating morning session as they generated swing and bounce but failed to get a breakthrough. New Zealand survived an appeal for lbw and an appeal for a catch which was upheld on review.
Daniel Flynn scored a patient 45 and put on 97 for the first wicket with Guptill and Taylor revealed he was battling a stomach bug throughout his two and a half hour innings and had been throwing up. Brendon McCullum scored a typically bullish 25.
Taylor is expecting to be in great position if his side could bat well past the lunch break tomorrow.
West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, in just his second test, finished with three of the West Indies four wickets and looked particularly tough to play later in the day, but Taylor was happy with how his side dealt with Narine on a whole. As the wicket was already taking plenty of turn, Taylor predicted Daniel Vettori – playing his New Zealand record 112th test – would play a big part later in the match as would Williamson's offspinners.
The day ended with NZ on 232/4 with Kane Williamson on 2 and Neil Wagner on 4. After losing a perfect chance to build an imposing total, NZ must rebuild with their feeble lower order and WI must look to restrict NZ to as low a total as possible. With the two sides having had a bittersweet day, the second day hopefully be the difference in this test match.
