Good Hair Day Productions, in association with The Theatre Centre, presents the world premiere of Julie Sits Waiting. Bringing together two strands of Canadian artistic practice – English Canada's strong playwriting history and Quebec's rich electroacoustic music tradition – acclaimed performers Richard Armstrong and Fides Krucker move between speech and chant to bel-canto and extended-voice with astonishing subtlety and nuance, igniting a volatility of passion in this unusual love story. Julie Sits Waiting runs September 14-23, 2012 at Theatre Passe Muraille's BackSpace.

Juxtaposed against life in contemporary Toronto, Julie Sits Waiting exposes the complexity of desire. Two characters rich with life experience (Julie is married to a police officer and Mick is an Anglican priest) are taken by a reckless and youthful passion in a house under renovation. They venture outside their everyday lives and discover extraordinary intimacy; but the urgency of their primal passion drives them towards colossal disaster.

Acclaimed Toronto writer Tom Walmsley has fashioned an exacting and visceral libretto – his first – communicating the core of human emotion. His poetry, novels and plays (Something Red, Blood, Descent) possess a similarly fiercely funny and raw honesty. Montreal composer Louis Dufort, through his long collaboration with choreographer Marie Chouinard, has a deep understanding of the rhythms of human bodies on stage. Shifting from harsh and angular to beautiful and lyrical, he underscores the libretto with a sense of the many levels of human expression.

Julie is a deep exploration of the physical and emotional realm.  Directors Alex Fallis (an actor, singer and director) and Heidi Strauss (a dancer and choreographer) bring with them an understanding of how the human body can be made to 'speak' in performance – by action, stillness, sound, silence, presence, absence, in light and darkness, through spatial relations and architecture. Designers Teresa Przybylski (set and costume), Jeremy Mimnagh (video) and Rebecca Picherack (lighting) are subtle and precise artists. Darren Copeland (sound diffusion) has significant expertise when it comes to making complex electronic sound available to human ears and subtly amplifying the voice so that it still sounds human.

Richard Armstrong's unique experience as a pioneer of the extension of the human voice began in the sixties when, as a founding member of the Roy Hart Theatre in France, he helped create one of Europe's most influential schools of voice and body research. From that time on, his work as teacher, director and performer has taken him to over 30 countries and inspired a whole generation of performers and their work. Richard is associate professor of drama for New York University's Experimental Theater Wing at the Tisch School of the Arts and its international summer school in Amsterdam.

Fides Krucker has been an innovative interpreter of vocal music in Canada and abroad for 25 years. Her award-winning Good Hair Day Productions, launched in 2002, created the electroacoustic show The girl with no door on her mouth, the immersive cabaret A little rain never hurt no oneŠ (named one of the top 10 shows of the year by NOW Magazine),  the r n'b disability show CP Salon (now an NFB film) and the boxing piece Yours to Break. For fourteen years Fides created work with the Dora winning interdisciplinary ensemble, URGE. Krucker teaches internationally and has just recorded Berio's Folk Songs! with Vancouver's Turning Point Ensemble. Her vocal work is soon to be released by the classical label Wergo.
