Fight over Elvis Presley’s money starts

A legal dispute over control of Elvis Presley’s estate has emerged, involving Priscilla Presley, his ex-wife and the mother of their daughter, Lisa Marie. When Elvis died in 1977, his estate was put into a trust, with Lisa Marie as the sole beneficiary. Despite financial struggles over the years, the Elvis brand has continued to generate significant revenue. In 2005, Lisa Marie sold 85% of the estate to pay off her debts, and the remaining 15% remains in the family and is highly valuable.

Following Lisa Marie’s death earlier this year, a battle has ensued over who will become the next beneficiary of Elvis’s estate. A change to the trust in 2016, authorized by Lisa Marie, removed Priscilla and Barry Siegel as trustees and designated Lisa Marie’s children with ex-husband Danny Keough, Riley and the late Benjamin Keough, as co-trustees. Priscilla has challenged this amendment in court, arguing that she should be reinstated as a trustee due to various issues with the amendment, including it not being delivered to her as required, the misspelling of her name, and missing provisions and signatures.

Priscilla’s lawyers believe the amendment is invalid, but Riley Keough has not commented on the situation. Priscilla insists that her actions are motivated by a desire to honor Elvis’s legacy and the family’s reputation. The legal battle has attracted public attention, but Priscilla has requested that people withhold judgment and allow the family to work together to resolve the issue.

The dispute over Elvis’s estate continues as the release of the Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic, “Elvis,” approaches. The film has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, with Austin Butler, who plays the role of Elvis, being a favorite in the Best Actor category.
