Former Donda Academy Teachers Sue Kanye West

Two ex-teachers from Donda Academy, Kanye West’s private Christian K-12 school, have filed a lawsuit alleging violations of education, health and safety codes, as well as racial discrimination and retaliation against teachers.

Cecilia Hailey and Chekarey Byers, who are the only two Black female teachers identified at the school, claim they were fired after raising concerns about the conditions at the school and students’ safety to administrators. The lawsuit outlines a list of “unusual rules and restrictions” at the school, including bans on common items such as coloring sheets, chairs, dinnerware, and Nike or Adidas branded clothing. The plaintiffs also allege that students were not allowed outside for recess and were only allowed to eat sushi on the floor, as chairs were not permitted.

The teachers further claim that the school lacked a nurse or janitor, that administrators failed to intervene in cases of severe bullying, and that cleaning products were restricted to acid water and microfiber cloths. Hailey also stated that Kanye banned books on Black history. The teachers additionally claim that their paychecks were untimely or inaccurate, and they were terminated last month with no explanation. Parents who enrolled their children at the unaccredited school for $15,000 a year were required to sign non-disclosure agreements, according to Rolling Stone. West’s attorney and Donda Academy representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment.
