A.R. Rahman was against the remake of Humma Humma

With the trend of remaking popular Bollywood classics from the 90s really picking up, yet another song was recently recreated for ‘the youth’. The song was none other than the track from Mani Ratnam’s Bombay, ‘Humma Humma’. The said song was added to the album OK Jaanu which released today.

While the music was composed by A.R.Rahman for both the films (Bombay and OK Jaanu), the latter had a rap touch given by the rapper Baadshah. Though the song started trending soon, there were many who weren’t convinced with the idea of someone toying around with the classic. In a recent interview, the Oscar award winning music composer A.R.Rahman confessed that he too wasn’t entirely happy with the idea of remaking the song.

When producer of OK Jaanu Karan Johar and director of the film Shaad Ali approached A.R. Rahman for the remake rights, Rahman revealed that he had categorically refused. He had then told them that it wasn’t a good idea but they had eventually convinced him by stating that Baadshah can spin his magic and impress the youth. The musician further maintained that it was apparently a big hit and added that they were probably right.

In a unique move of sorts, A.R. Rahman also recreated the ‘Urvashi Urvashi’ track from the film Humse Hai Muqabla to make some political statements. Mentioning about how music helps in making these political statements, A.R. Rahman also added that one shouldn’t be too aggressive since that will make the music boring.

On the other hand, A.R.Rahman, who is regarded as a music maestro, recently saw a small dip in the popularity of his music. But, he isn’t disheartened. In fact, talking about it, A.R.Rahman explained about how music evolves with age and time. But, that just hasn’t reduced his passion towards it. A.R.Rahman also expressed pride in his work and also retained that critics were free to have their opinions.
