Today is the day when the nation celebrates the auspicious day of Rakshabandhan. This day, antiquated messages about brothers being the protectors of their sisters do the rounds as sisters tie rakhis to their brothers. While these messages are floating around, Akshay Kumar’s sister Alka Hiranandani has an empowering message for everyone.

In an emotional video shared by Akshay Kumar, Alka Hiranandani talked about how her father always asked her to take her brother along whenever she went out. And Akshay Kumar would always refuse to go with her by saying, “Apna dhyan khud rakho (protect yourself).”

Alka Hiranandani later said that it was quite later she realized it was a great advice given to her by her brother. “I realized the value of his words when I sent my daughter to study abroad. When she asked me if ‘Everything will be okay,’ I replied, ‘Everything will be fine, just take care of your own safety’. This has been the greatest gift my brother has given to me and my daughter – The strength to be self-sufficient. Thank you, Raju. I love you. This Raksha Bandhan, do not protect your sister. Empower her.”

On the work front, Akshay Kumar features in upcoming film Toilet- Ek Prem Katha starring Bhumi Pednekar opposite him. Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, it also stars Anupam Kher and Divyendu Sharma in key roles. The film is scheduled to release on August 11, 2017.
