It was 30 years back when the soundtrack of Mithun Chakraborty’s Dance Dance [1987] had featured a disco number ‘Zindagi Meri Dance Dance’. The song has now been recreated by Olefonken and has found a place in the narrative of Arjun Rampal’s Daddy.
“Of course, Arjun is not dancing to his one, it just won’t go with the character of gangster turned politician Arun Gawli that he is enacting in the film,” quips a crew member, “That said, the song has a very important part to play in the film. It comes at a crucial juncture of the film where Arjun comes face to face with other gangsters from the era gone by.”
Since the decade of 80s had quite a few club songs like these in vogue and also featured quite prominently in the Hindi films, producer Arjun Rampal was hunting for a song that would fit into the narrative.
“This is where Bappi Lahiri’s vast repertoire of disco songs came into picture,” our source adds, “He has put together dozens of such songs and while there have been quite a few popular numbers from the 80s, the idea was to pick a song that went with the feel and mood of Daddy. ‘Zindagi Meri Dance’ from Dance Dance was just the right song for the situation and everyone lapped on to that.”
Sung by Alisha Chinai and Vijay Benedict, the original tune, lyrics and the rendition has been kept intact with DJ Olefonken coming on the scene and bringing his own touch to the track.
“The result is pretty impressive, more so since the entire production design of the video has been truly authentic as well,” an observer comments, “It is good to see the whole club setting with Serbian model, dancer and actress Natasa Stankovic holing the centre-stage. What you get to see is a retro track that truly reminds one of the times gone by when such disco tracks were in vogue.”
Since Daddy has a large part of the narrative set in the late 70s and then the 80s, a song like ‘Zindagi Meri Dance’ has emerged as a right fit to the narrative. While director Ashim Ahluwalia has shown his command over the era gone by in his debut feature film Miss Lovely as well, one waits to see what are the other nuggets that he brings to fore in Daddy that is set to release in four weeks from now.
