Kangna Ranaut

From Gangster to Queen, the career graph of Kangna Ranaut has been rather dramatic, with drastic highs and lows. The actress, who managed to walk away with all applauds and appreciation for her film Queen last year, yet again, proved her mettle this year with Tanu Weds Manu Returns. The romantic comedy had the actress starring in a double role for the first time.

Normally, when we compare sequels to its first installment, often the second part pales in comparison and the reason, in many cases, is the script. While we cannot deny the fact that the script of Tanu Weds Manu Returns was the hero, yet another truth is that Kangna Ranaut had a tricky job of pulling off a double role and that too, one that is extremely a contrast to the other.

When we look back at examples of Bollywood actors, many of them who have tried this formula have been unsuccessful. From Shah Rukh Khan in Duplicate to Ajay Devgn in the recently released Action Jackson, such films in double roles have turned into box office failures for varied reasons. However, in the same breath, it may also be noted that Hema Malini as Seeta Aur Geeta and Sridevi who starred in the remake of the same, Chaalbaaz were applauded for the performance. And now, it is contemporary actress Kangna Ranaut who seems to be following the footsteps.

Even the trade analysts are applauding the actress for playing Tanu aka Tanuja and Datto with aplomb. Taran Adarsh says, "What I admire as the double role is that though I know it's Kangna playing Tanu and Dattoo, you still can't believe that it's the same actress portraying the two completely different roles – that's the hallmark of a great actor. There is no stopping her. She's a very fine actress and very grounded. Her filmography which includes her national award winning performance for Fashion and Queen speaks volumes of her talent. And what makes it more credible is that she wasn't a star kid or someone with a big banner launch, but was someone who took it upon herself to carve a unique niche for herself. Kangna is truly the queen of Bollywood, ruling hearts and the BO."

Voicing out similar thoughts is Amul Mohan saying, "Kangna is phenomenal in TWMR, there are no two ways about that. But the one thing she pulled off brilliantly was the double role aspect of the script. When an actor can make you believe that they are two different people when in reality they're only one I think that's what adds to the film tremendously. And that's pure talent! Like I've been saying for a while now, talent like her is so hard to find."

Talking about the same Amod Mehra adds, "Till date there have been many heroines who have featured in double roles. But till date no heroine has been able to play two distinct characters with such conviction as Kangna has. Outstanding! Take a bow Ms Ranaut. Bravo. All awards assured."
