Recent study established that eating excessive fast food can shrink brain. Researchers found out that people with diets high in trans-fats are more prone to go through brain shrink-age which can cause Alzheimer’s disease.

People who consume high quantity of vitamins C and E, the B vitamins and vitamin D, seem to have better brains than those with diets low in these nutrients.

The study is published in the journal Neurology. It is based on 104 people, ages 65 and older, enrolled in the Oregon Brain Aging Study.

“We know in Alzheimer’s disease that total brain atrophy [shrinkage] is accelerated com-pared to people of the same age and same gender that don’t have Alzheimer’s disease,” said Bowman, a naturopathic doctor in the department of neurology at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

The study concluded that people who had high levels of circulating trans fats had less brain volume, which led them to several diseases including poorer memory, attention, language and processing speed skills.

Previously, few studies have focused upon the link between trans-fats and brain function, Bowman said. “I think our study is one of the first to look at blood levels of trans fats related to brain health.”

“Trans fats are known to be bad for cardiovascular health,” he said. “It makes sense that they’re probably bad for the brain, too.”

  1. Evcomment_IDence keeps mounting in the case against trans fats. I found this vcomment_IDeo that lays it out in plain English: http://nutritionfacts.org/vcomment_IDeos/good-great-bad-killer-fats/ At the same site, here’s a 3-minute roundup of some interesting studies of fruit & vegetable consumption on cognitive function, including one on Swedish twins, one from the Harvard Nurses’ Study, and one that found that different foods seem to boost different areas of the brain. Fascinating stuff. http://nutritionfacts.org/vcomment_IDeos/constructing-a-cognitive-portfolio/
